Specialty Plastics for Construction
At Plas-Tech Fabrications, we work with construction-industry customers of all shapes and sizes. If you’re new to custom plastic fabrication, we’d be happy to guide you through the process. Following is some information about materials with specialty capabilities useful in the construction industry.

Fire Retardant Plastics
Also known as fire-safe polymer, these plastics are self extinguishing and popular in enclosed spaces such as elevators. They are also used as wall coverings in certain construction applications. Fire-retardant plastics may also be used to fabricate corner guards, crash rails and windows where fire code requires.

Bullet- and Explosion-Resistant Plastics
These plastics resist degradation due to high impacts such as bullets and explosions. In the construction industry, they are often used to fabricate windows and enclosure in high-security buildings.

Security Glazing & Laminates
Virtually unbreakable, Lexan® sheets provide 250 times the impact strength of glass and 30 times that of acrylic. Plas-Tech fabricates enclosures and security glazing with Lexan® Lexguard® laminates, which offer the highest level of containment and ballistic protection.

High Pressure Laminate (HPL)
This is a durable polymer that is often used in cabinetry. It is constructed of resin (plastic) and paper components that are fused under high pressure. HPL sustains impacts and other wear and tear better than wood. Formica is a well-known brand of HPL.

Glass/Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP)
FRP is a polymer material reinforced with fibres of glass, carbon or aramid (e.g. Kevlar). The fibres reinforce and enhance the material’s strength and elasticity. These materials are optimal where the application needs to be lightweight yet strong and provide cost savings over cast aluminum or steel.

Sintra®
This is a popular brand name of closed-cell PVC foamboard, which is lightweight and very rigid, yet easy to cut and shape. It provides high resistance to moisture and chemicals.

PVC
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a thermoplastic constructed of vinyl. It is widely used in construction (e.g. pipes, ceiling tiles) because it is cost-effective, durable and easy to assemble. It is a common insulation on electric wires and electronic accessories.
